Every ThinkReliability RCA training course covers the fundamentals of effective problem solving and show you how to expand this process based on the complexity of the problems you work.

Typical problem-solving role

  • Complex problem solver
  • Investigation lead

The Cause Mapping for Facilitators + Documentation workshop is designed for those who are solving high-risk, highly complex problems and want to be able to quickly facilitate and document the details in Excel.

What type of problems do you need to solve?

  • Master facilitation skills and document efficiently in an Excel file.

What you will receive

Each workshop attendee will receive:

Is this Cause Mapping workshop just for people who lead complex incident investigations?

While Cause Mapping is an excellent tool to improve your ability to facilitate a complex investigation, the lessons learned can be universally applied to basic problem solving and problem communication. In fact, even if you aren't building a Cause Map, the workshop teaches you why people argue and debate, and provides approaches for managing even day-to-day problems within your organization and personal life.

Are there any prerequisites for attending this workshop?

There are no prerequisites. Day 3 of the workshop is focused on using the Microsoft Excel Cause Mapping Template, so you will need a laptop computer with an external mouse. The computer will need to have Microsoft Excel loaded as well. The Cause Mapping template is compatible with any version of Excel (2003, 2007, 2010, 2013).

Why do I need an external mouse?

Many of the Excel shortcuts require moving boxes while at the same time pressing and holding specific keys on the keyboard. This is significantly easier using an external mouse versus trying to manipulate with the touchpad on your computer.

I have a Mac computer with Excel. Will that work for Day 3?

While you can use a Mac with Excel, some of the shortcut functions don't work the same way.

I don’t have enough people to justify a private workshop – do you have a Public Workshop I can attend?

Yes, this workshop is offered each month both in cities around the US and online with a live instructor – See Full List of Dates/Locations

I don’t want to leave my office, can this workshop be presented online with a live instructor?

Yes, all of our workshops can be presented online with a live instructor

What people are saying

A very enjoyable and engaging RCA training course. I learned a lot and would feel confident in applying the techniques discussed during the three days. The pace was just right and the relaxed atmosphere allowed plenty of open discussion. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone considering it. – Workshop attendee, Valero

Cause Mapping and the provided templates will be extremely useful when problem solving. The tools are intuitive to use, and everyone will be able to have input to find the cause. This same thought process can be used to PREVENT issues before they occur. Thanks for a great workshop. – Workshop attendee, Nestle

My colleague and I left the workshop with new ideas about how to address patient safety challenges through use of cause mapping, and were able to use these skills to lead an effective meeting and develop corrective actions the following week. – Workshop attendee, Kaiser Permanente

I found the workshop really interesting. Honestly I had pretty low expectations going into RCA training, figuring it would be pretty straightforward and dry. The presentation definitely wasn’t dry, and the simplicity & analytical strength of the methods you taught us are an elegant way to approach problems. I think what resonated with me most was the emphasis on multiple root causes + system thinking, rather than the binary right/wrong approach. – Workshop attendee, Invenergy

The Cause Mapping Workshop is a fantastic course for learning problem-solving techniques and leadership skills. Lots of real-life examples make the class interesting and relevant. By the end of the class, we had — in a couple of hours — determined a path forward on an issue that had been plaguing our organization for a couple of years. This course is definitely worth the time. – Workshop attendee, LMCO
